Police in NYC capture 2 suspects wanted in Newport shooting

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Two suspects wanted in connection with a shooting outside a Newport apartment complex last week have been apprehended in New York City.

Port Authority Police say 22-year-old Christopher Rodriguez of Newport and 20-year-old Joshua Melendez Torres of Mooresville, North Carolina, were taken into custody shortly after 7 a.m. Monday. Newport police suspected the two might be passing through the bus terminal on their way to Philadelphia.

Arrangements are being made to return Rodriguez and Torres to Newport to face charges in the shooting of a 25-year-old New Bedford, Massachusetts, man. The man was hit outside a building at the Festival Field complex by birdshot from a shotgun blast at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Sgt. Kevin Moreira tells The Newport Daily News the victim is a frequent visitor to the complex.
