Gastonia police charge 21-year-old woman in deadly hit-and-run

GASTONIA, N.C. — A woman accused in a deadly hit-and-run turned herself into Gastonia police Saturday after officers tracked down her car.

Police charged Katie Montgomery, 21, with hit-and-run, causing serious injury or death.

Officials accused Montgomery of leaving the scene Friday night after she hit a woman walking down Court Drive near Cox Road in Gastonia.

The pedestrian, 44-year-old Wanda Sue Hearn, died.

Hearn’s daughter, Brittnay Bowen, said she was devastated by the loss.

She said her mother cared deeply for others and would do anything for her family. She was married with two children.

"I don't see how you can sleep at night knowing you killed somebody's grandmother, mom,” Bowen said.

Police followed leads Saturday to track down Montgomery's burgundy 2008 GMC Acadia to a family member's home in Gaston County.

Police said they are still investigating and haven't said if alcohol, drugs or speed were factors in the deadly crash. Once the investigation is complete, officers will hand it to the district attorney to see if additional charges will be filed.

Anyone with information is asked to call 704-866-6702.
