Mother killed in Concord hit-and-run identified, suspect in custody

CONCORD, N.C. — A small memorial marks the location where a woman walking in Concord was hit and killed on Tuesday night.

Katilyn Michelle Ball, a 26-year-old mother from Concord, was pronounced dead after she was hit by a car at the intersection of Union Street South and Ridge Court Southwest around 8:15 p.m.

Police said the driver, who was traveling south, kept going and left the scene.

On Wednesday, 25-year-old Keshara Danayzia Bridges turned herself in to Concord police with an attorney. She is charged with involuntary manslaughter, felony hit and run and driving while her license was revoked.

Her car, a 2010 Nissan Altima, was found in Charlotte and recovered by Concord police.

Neighbors along Union Street said speeding cars are a constant problem along the stretch of road. The debris in front of Brandy Sloop’s home is a reminder driving fast can turn deadly.

“She took her final breath,” Sloop said.

Ball was walking near Coldwater Baptist Church when she was hit. By the time Sloop and her family ran out to help Ball, the driver had left.

Sloop made a memorial with a white cross and flowers to mark the scene where Ball died.

“Maybe this can help bring a little bit of closure, knowing this is where it happened,” Sloop said.

Friends, family and others stopped by on Wednesday to pay their respects and demand justice.

According to police, Ball was the mother of an 8-year-old.

“Accidents do happen, but for somebody to just leave the scene, that’s a totally different beast,” Sloop said. “Justice definitely needs to be served for that person.”

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Concord Police Department at 704-920-5000. Tips can be left anonymously by calling the Cabarrus Area Crime Stoppers at 704-93-CRIME.
