WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — An inmate who escaped while on a work assignment Monday in Raleigh has been captured, according to officials with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.
Officials said Larry J. Locklear, 66, was found along Interstate 95 around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Authorities said a DPS maintenance employee heading to work saw Locklear walking along I-95 in Johnston County.
The employee contacted the Benson Police Department, officials said, and the Benson police then contacted the State Highway Patrol.
Trooper H.C. Wiseman drove up to Locklear at mile 85 near Four Oaks and arrested him without incident, officials said.
Locklear is a felon serving a sentence at the Wake Correctional Center, authorities said.
Officials said Locklear was being held under minimum security at the facility, but now faces escape charges and will be demoted.
According to officials, Locklear has escaped or attempted to escape prison several times before.
Locklear's prior release date was October 2021.
