Police: Speed considered factor in fatal 2-car crash in northeast Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating after a two-car crash in northeast Charlotte late Friday night left one person dead.

It happened just before 10 p.m. along North Sharon Amity Road, between Shamrock Drive and East W.T. Harris Boulevard.

When officers got to the scene, they found a 2001 Cadillac SRX and a 1993 Honda Accord involved in a crash and both drivers were seriously hurt.

MEDIC took the drivers to the hospital, but the driver of the Honda, 27-year-old Manuel Fuentes, died from his injuries. Authorities have not released the name of the other driver or his condition.

An initial investigation into the crash indicated the Honda was traveling on North Sharon Amity Road when it hit the center median. The Honda then struck a concrete curb on the right side of the roadway and then hit the center median again. Then, the Honda crossed lanes into the path of the Cadillac, hitting it and ejecting the driver of the Honda.

Police do not believe speed and alcohol are contributing factors for the driver of the Cadillac.

Authorities said evidence gathered at the scene indicates Fuentes was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and speed is suspected to be a contributing factor.

It is unknown if Fuentes was impaired, but officers said they are waiting for test results.

No other information has been released.
