The 2012 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer struck a 2013 Toyota Yaris, killing two people inside. The truck ran off the left side of the road and slammed into a parked 2007 Toyota Scion as it came to rest in a yard on Boston Street.
Officials said the tractor-trailer missed three houses. The driver of the tractor-trailer was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center. The driver's condition is unknown and Newton police have not yet released the person's name.
Police identified the driver of the Toyota Yaris as Tammy Norman Frady and her passenger as Albert Lynn Frady.
RAW: Neighbor says he 'heard a loud boom'
The tractor-trailer came within a few feet of the bedroom where Paige Butterfield and her husband were sleeping.
"It missed the house, thank God it missed the house," Paige Butterfield said.
The Butterfields thought it was a storm passing through.
"I came out and saw the debris everywhere, and I said this can't be real," Wesley Butterfield said.
Reporter Dave Faherty talked to another man who lives near where the accident happened.
"(I) actually woke up. We heard a loud boom and then a few seconds later we heard another loud boom. Really didn't know what happened, at first we thought it was thunder. And then went and got up and came down on our golf carts to see what happened," Rick Huffman said.
Officials have not said what caused the accident.
Channel 9 reached out to Castellini Group, the company listed on the tractor-trailer's cab. Castellini Group, a produce wholesaler, said it does not have a comment at this time.
