The Political Beat: Local representative eyes state treasurer’s office

CHARLOTTE — A Ballantyne Democrat is the first candidate to enter the race for the North Carolina’s Treasurer’s Office in 2024.

State House Rep. Wesley Harris announced his bid exclusively to the Political Beat earlier this week.

Harris has represented District 105 since 2018. He is the only PhD economist in the state assembly.

He told the Political Beat’s Joe Bruno why he has decided to run for higher office.

“I feel that we have a state that really needs to invest in its people more than we really have over the past decade,” Harris said. “I’ve seen all the opportunities that we’ve had to invest in our people that we’ve let slip by.

“I think that is further expanding our urban-rural divide and really causing a lot of issues in our politics and causing a lot of polarization in our communities. The state has a responsibility to invest in our people and I think I am the right man to do the job.”
