Man dies after truck slams into building along Brookshire Freeway

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Portions of a busy northwest Charlotte freeway were blocked early Tuesday morning after a truck crashed into a building and caught fire, officials told Channel 9.

The wreck happened around 4:30 a.m. on the Brookshire Freeway near Interstate-85, and police had to close the inbound lanes of the Brookshire while they investigated the crash.

Just before 11 a.m., police told Channel 9 that the man driving the truck did not survive.

Police said they rushed Tony Cunningham to Carolinas Medical Center, where he later died.

Investigators said that it appears Cunningham may have suffered a medical episode which led to the crash, and added that neither speed nor impairment were a factor in the wreck.

The Brookshire reopened around 5:20 a.m.
