‘Preserving their dignity’: Renovated south Charlotte resource center supports people in crisis

CHARLOTTE — A renovated space and a new name is allowing the nonprofit the McLeod Centers for Wellbeing to support more people across North Carolina.

The south Charlotte facility opening on Friday will serve as a hub for the mental and behavioral health resources, while also helping people recovering from drug addiction.

“It’s really about preserving their dignity and respect, because they’ve made a critical and very difficult decision,” said Mary Ward, president of the McLeod Centers for Wellbeing.

Ward says the nonprofit serves an average of nearly 4,000 people each day.

Jonathan Cansler is one of the many people to find help and hope from the centers.

“Had I not made it to the McLeod Center, I don’t think I would be here today,” he said.
