Program prescreens student-athletes for signs of heart defects

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Atrium Health will hold its annual Heart of a Champion, an intensive screening for student-athletes that goes beyond a physical.

Every athlete gets an EKG in addition to typical screenings.

Students need to be aware of symptoms that could be signs of a heart defect, like chest pain and dizziness during exercise, officials said.

A Charlotte mother credits the Heart of a Champion test with saving her son's life because the screening caught a heart defect.

Doctors got him into surgery and to this day, he's able to play football alongside everyone else.

“You hear so many times each year something (happening) to student-athletes,” parent Nicole Riley said. “(It sends) chills through my body knowing it could have been us, if it wasn’t for Heart of a Champion
