Proposal to allow guns in parks heads back to drawing board

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — A proposal to allow concealed guns in Mecklenburg County parks is headed back to the drawing board.

Tuesday night, commissioners asked the county attorney to put together several versions of the plan to consider.

Right now, the proposal would allow guns on greenways, but there are restrictions, and some commissioners say they punish responsible gun owners.

The current proposal does not allow someone with a concealed carry permit to bring a gun within 25 feet of a playground, park building or athletic field.

Commissioner Matthew Ridenhour wants to change that. He said Tuesday night gun owners with CCWs have proven they are responsible and have gone through a thorough background check, and should not be so restricted on where they can carry protection.
