CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officials are searching for new ways to take thousands of motorists from Charlotte to the northern towns and counties, even as new toll lanes on Interstate 77 are being constructed.

There is a proposal to build several new roads throughout north Mecklenburg, Iredell and Cabarrus counties to give commuters new alternate routes.
