Prosecutors: Shelby couple planned to dismember friend

SHELBY, N.C. — Prosecutors say a Shelby couple charged in connection with the shooting death of a friend planned to dismember the body.

Jesse Hoppes and Simms Wilson made their first appearances in court early Friday.

Hoppes asked the judge how he can be charged with first-degree murder when he says he was attacked.

Police said they got an anonymous Crime Stoppers tip that led them to the couple's home Thursday morning. An officer said he saw the couple standing over the body of Earl Hall.

Hoppes is being held without bond. Wilson, who is charged with accessory after the fact, was given a $200,000 bond.
