WEDDINGTON, N.C. — The Providence Volunteer Fire Department will close despite the department’s fight to continue providing fire service to the town of Weddington.
Channel 9 has been following this issue since April when Weddington town leaders voted to end its contract with the department.
Leaders said the town would save money if they switched their fire service to Wesley Chapel.
The Providence Fire Department has provided service in Union County for 61 years. It will officially shut down at midnight on July 28.
The department's lawsuit against the town of Weddington is still pending.
Providence chief Kenny Schott released this statement on the closure:
“Providence has always tried to do what is right and in the best interest of public safety. That has always been our guiding principle. We are not about politics--we are here to serve the community. Providence will continue to stand ready to serve when the call comes until we vacate the building the department built to serve Weddington. And when the call comes again down the road, Providence hopes to be there for all of you."
