WEDDINGTON, N.C. — The Providence Volunteer Fire Department has filed a lawsuit against the town of Weddington.
The lawsuit comes after the town let pass a June 1 deadline imposed by the department to either reinstate its service or pay damages.

Eyewitness News' news partners at the Enquirer Journal reported the lawsuit was filed Thursday in Union County.
In April, Weddington leaders ended its contract with Providence to save money.
The lawsuit alleges the town terminated the contract without cause. Town leaders said the earliest they could discuss the request is this week.
