Rabies found in Union County prompts warning to pet owners

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A raccoon in part of Union County tested positive for rabies this week.

Union County Public Health and Animal Services said the raccoon was found in the southeastern part of the county when it tested was tested for rabies.

The agency says it’s a reminder for pet owners to keep themselves and their animals safe from rabies.

Public Health and Animal Services says it’s important to not leave food outside for animals to have access to. You should also make sure your pets are up to date on their vaccinations. You’re also urged to avoid direct contact with wild animals.

If your animal is exposed to a potentially rabid animal, officials say you should wear gloves to protect yourself from the infectious saliva that may be on your animal’s coat.

Rabies is deadly if left untreated, and there’s no known cure once symptoms appear.
