Ranking the Charlotte-area ZIP codes that deliver the best returns on investment

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For homebuyers in many Charlotte-area neighborhoods who’ve held onto their properties during the past decade, the payoff — in terms of returns on investment — has been high.

A recent analysis by The Business Journals, which is also owned by Charlotte Business Journal parent company American City Business Journals, tracked home values from the depths of the recession in August 2009 through August of this year, then applied a hypothetical scenario in which homebuyers entered the market a decade ago with a 10% downpayment to make a purchase.

Data on median home values came from Zillow Group.

Under that scenario, the median return for thousands of ZIP codes across the U.S. equated to about 214% for buyers, with some 12,885 of those locations appreciating in value, with a median price change of 31%.

Of the 83 ZIP codes in the greater Charlotte area that were included in this analysis, 62 — or nearly 75% — posted a ROI that topped the 214% figure seen by housing markets nationally.

Those owning homes near center city have experienced some of the best returns on investment locally over the past 10 years. Check out this slideshow to see the 20 ZIP codes across the Charlotte region that delivered the bet return on investment over the past decade.
