Red Cross desperate for blood donations after drives canceled

CHARLOTTE — The Red Cross is pleading for blood donations after more than 20 blood drives in our area have been canceled so far.

That means 700 units of blood won't be collected and cannot go to someone in need.

Davidson United Methodist Church kept its blood drive going Monday afternoon.

Red Cross workers said they wiped down the beds more often and are constantly changing gloves.

They said they need for blood is critical and that will only grow every day.

“There are still car accidents, mothers who are giving birth and may experience complications,” said Maya Franklin, communications manager. “There are still cancer patients going through chemotherapy who still require platelets.”.

If hospitals can’t get the blood supply the need, doctors may be forced to postpone needed surgeries.
