Regulators hold open house to discuss Catawba Nuclear Plant

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Federal regulators will talk Tuesday night about the safety of the Catawba Nuclear Plant.

The regulators have an open house planned from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rock Hill City Hall on Johnston Street.

Regulators said the plant operated without serious problems in the last year.

They inspected the plant after the Japanese earthquake and tsunami and found the nuclear reactors safe.

One of the items not on Tuesday night’s agenda is the loss of power at the plant earlier this month. It triggered a low-level emergency and Duke Energy had to shut down a reactor.

Neighbors heard steam being released from the plant during the power outage. However, Duke Energy officials said there was no safety risk to anyone in the area.
