Remains of Korean War soldier will return home to Gaston County

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Nearly 70 years after being killed in action, a Korean War soldier will be brought home to Gaston County.

Army Cpl. Earl W. Duncan was a member of Company D, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, 31st Regimental Combat Team when his unit was positioned near the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea.

On Nov. 27, 1950, Chinese communists launched a surprise attack at the reservoir and Duncan was reported missing in action five days later.

After the battle, his body could not be found.

On July 27, 2018, following the summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un in June 2018, North Korea turned over 55 boxes containing the remains of American service members killed during the Korean War.

Sophisticated DNA testing confirmed Duncan was among the remains.

Duncan was a McAdenville native and will be buried Nov. 30 in Gastonia.

7,606 Americans remain unaccounted for from the Korean War.
