Report highlights racial wealth gap in 2 key Charlotte industries

CHARLOTTE — A new report highlights major racial disparities in two key industries in the Charlotte region.

Minorities hold a disproportionate number of lower-paying jobs in health care and manufacturing, according to the study from the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance.

For example, home health aides make some of the lowest salaries in the health care industry. According to the report, 46% of aides are Black.

Minorities also make up 66% of employees in low-wage manufacturing jobs.

As to how the issue should be addressed, the CRBA has a few recommendations. The alliance recommends putting more minorities in training programs with career pathway, as well as adding better support systems, like access to transportation and scholarships.
