Residents push for answers after sink hole opens in east Charlotte neighborhood

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Neighbors in an East Charlotte neighborhood are pushing for answers tonight after this huge sink hole opened up in their neighborhood. They told Channel 9 the hole is about 8 feet deep.

"There are children out we don't want to be held liable for anything that might happen,” said Jerome Jones.

The hole borders his home on Paper Tree Road. He said it started off as a very small hole about two weeks ago and grew quickly. Now it is so big it exposes the base of the manhole underneath.

"It's a very scary situation,” said neighbor Sheilah Jones.

Neighbors called the City of Charlotte to complain last week. They said someone even came out to survey the problem, but didn’t say when it would be fixed.

"Everything regarding the resolution was ambiguous so there was no direct: 'we'll have someone out there this day and time'” said Jerome Jones.

Channel 9 reached out to the City of Charlotte. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services department sent the following statement:

“On Dec. 19, Storm Water Services staff investigated the reported drainage concern. This is a private storm drainage system located on private property. The private property owner is responsible for maintenance and repair of the system, including any detailed assessment to determine the problem and resolution.

Channel 9 also reached out to the HOA for the Woodbury Community. The spokesperson was not available due to the Christmas holiday.
