Residents say they were not informed of potential reconstruction at apartments

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A zoning committee is reviewing plans to demolish and rebuild an apartment complex in south Charlotte.

Camden Pinehurst on Providence Road near Fairview filed a petition to replace all of its buildings with garden-style apartments.

Eyewitness News spoke to some residents on Wednesday who said they were never told about it.

"We have got nothing, I didn't even know about it," said resident Kenneth Minor.

It is a rezoning notice and Eyewitness News learned Camden Pinehurst filed it with the City of Charlotte in November.

The plan calls for the rezoning of more than 36 acres of land. It would demolish all 40 of its buildings and replace it with 16 new three- and four-story garden-style apartments.

It would affect 580 multifamily units.

"I need to know these kinds of things. I need to know if I need to find another place, or if they are going to be paying for our stay," said Minor.

Camden managers said they have already held two community meetings and a public meeting.

Eyewitness News spoke to one resident who said she found out through a neighbor.

She didn't want to show her face, but said provisions for residents were not mentioned in last week's public meeting.

"It came to the point where everyone was just leaving because they were not addressing us at all ," she said.

Residents said they'd support the plan if they knew about it and if it meant they could continue their leases in the new apartments.

Camden would not comment on its plans for residents.

The city council could vote on the issue as early as next month. If approved construction could start right away.

A zoning supervisor said typically the apartment would let their tenants know if they were not going to renew their leases or would pay them some type of compensation if they were leaving them without a place places to live.
