ROCK HILL, S.C. — A woman screamed -- loud enough for a man riding by on a bicycle to hear -- as a man with his face covered pulled a gun on her at a Rock Hill ATM.
It happened around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Family Trust Federal Credit Union on Progress Way off Dave Lyle Boulevard.
The victim pulled up to the ATM to make a deposit. The next thing she saw was a man with his face covered at her window, holding a gun.
She screamed, and he yelled at her to stop screaming, before firing the pistol in the air.
Rock Hill police said that gunshot is a big concern to them.
"This guy took it to the next level after he didn't get any money," said police spokesman Mark Bollinger.
Police said the robber kept his hand on the ATM cash dispenser, but no money ever came out. He may have fired the gun out of frustration.
He then got into a dark-colored car and left.
Surveillance video shows the man with a white cloth only over his mouth. He's wearing blue surgical gloves and holding a gun. The video clearly shows him at the driver's window, and he appears to grab for her at one point.
An eyewitness on a bike apparently saw the suspect walk by with a gun at his hip, and heard the woman's scream and the gunshot. Police have questioned him about the description of the robber.
Family Trust customer Miranda Prisland called the incident scary, but said she avoids using ATMs at night.
"Honestly, I don't use the ATM that often, and when we do, we don't do it after dark," she said.
Dan Dupree told Channel 9 there are too many places a potential robber can hide.
"That’s bad news," he said. "There are just too many trees and too much shrubbery. I'd always use one where it's wide open and there's bunch of people.”
The suspect description is vague -- a black man, 30 to 35 years old, with short hair and wearing all dark clothes, and holding a piece of clothing over his face.
The last time there was armed robbery at an ATM in Rock Hill was in May. That robber was not caught.
