Roof Above battles mold issues to keep shelter open through winter

CHARLOTTE — Roof Above has found mold in two of their Charlotte locations and are implementing a plan for one location that is currently being used as an emergency shelter for those in need during the cold winter.

Roof Above officials told Channel 9 that they were aware of a mold issue at their Lucille Giles Men’s Shelter on Statesville Avenue.

Roof Above said they responded to the issue by installing air scrubbers to help remove airborne mold spores and improve air quality. The organization also said it consulted with a third-party industrial hygienist to test for mold and create a remediation plan.

The plan is set to be implemented over the next several days.

Roof Above said its long-term plan for the building is to renovate it, although it is currently being used as an overnight shelter for men to get through the harsh winter weather as an alternative to sleeping outside.

Channel 9 discovered that the Clanton Road location also had a mold issue that was resolved in October 2021.

Representatives said the location was originally a hotel that was purchased by Roof Above in November 2020. It was used as a winter shelter for women and children in partnership with the Salvation Army from December 2020 to April 2021.

Roof Above said there were no reports of mold during any of the guests’ stay. The mold was discovered during renovations in August 2021, when the building was vacant.

The Clanton Road location is still under construction and there are no tenants living there at this time.

Roof Above is converting the former hotel into permanent supportive housing and expects to open it to tenants in the spring after it passes certificate of occupancy requirements.
