Rowan County man wins $25,000 a year for life after purchasing ticket during daily walk

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A Rowan County man won $25,000 a year for life after stopping by a local convenience store during his daily walk.

Raymond Truesdale said he often stops by the Speedway on East Innes Street in Salisbury during his walks every day and on June 1, that routine paid off.

“It’s my regular routine for walking,” Truesdale said.

Truesdale said he bought a few $2 Lucky for Life tickets and he played his own numbers on the ticket.

“I try to stick with the same numbers two or three times, then I’ll change and get some new ones," he said.

Truesdale said he went back to the store the next day to check the ticket. His ticket matched all five white balls, which beat the odds of one in 1.8 million.

“I just kept telling myself, ‘Don’t get excited. Don’t make no big changes," Truesdale said.

Winners have the option to take $25,000 every year for life or take all the money at one time. He chose to take the lump sum of $390,000. After federal and state tax withholdings, Truesdale took home $275,925.

“I’m gonna buy me a new car for one thing,” Truesdale said. “And I’ll probably buy my kid a house. If I can get a reasonable rate, I’ll probably buy both of my kids a house.”
