WARSAW, N.C. — The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating a North Carolina officer who put a man into a chokehold outside of a Waffle House.
Anthony Wall took his 16-year-old sister to prom last Saturday, and then they stopped at the Waffle House in Warsaw.
Police were called after Wall said he got into an argument with the staff.
Video then shows an officer putting Wall into a chokehold with his hands up.
Warsaw mayor A.J. Connors is backing the officer's move.
"The police officer did what he had to do,” Connors said. “This is not a racially-motivated issue. This was just a young man who had broken the law and an officer arrested him. Unfortunately, physical contact took place. He refused to cooperate."
The mayor asked the community to take away pre-judgements and let the judicial system do its job.
Gov. Roy Cooper responded by saying it’s critical these incidents are investigated, and that they need to continue efforts for training and awareness.
The Waffle House CEO spoke with Wall, and released a statement saying they're investigating and that initial reports show Wall was agitated and police were called.
The police chief of Warsaw released a statement saying they're speaking with witnesses and gathering more video of what happened and the district attorney has been alerted of the investigation.
