‘It touched my heart’: SC veteran pushes to honor boy who died saving little sister

CHESTER, S.C. — A South Carolina veteran is pushing for a special day of remembrance to honor an 11-year-old boy who died after pushing his sister out of the path of an oncoming car.

Six years ago, La’Darious Wylie was waiting at a school bus stop with his 7-year-old sister, Sha’Vonta, when a car came hurtling toward them.

La’Darious pushed his sister out of the way, but he was hit by the car and did not survive.

At one time, Chester County leaders tried to rename a park in La’Darious’ honor, but it never came to fruition. A veteran who served in the Vietnam War planned to speak in front of Chester City Council members on Monday to ask them to honor La’Darious in a special way.

Robin Massy wants to make Nov. 28, which would have been La’Darious’ birthday, La’Darious Wylie Day.

“When I read about it, it really touched my heart, and I read everything I could about what happened and all the efforts of trying to get something done for him here,” Massy said. “The fact that he sacrificed his life to save his little sister. As a veteran, you know a lot of heroes. Not too many kids are heroes.”

Channel 9′s South Carolina reporter Tina Terry spoke with one council member who said he supports the idea.

“It’s all about remembering a child and remembering his story,” Massy said.

He hopes that the day will inspire others to love the way La’Darious loved.

“Isn’t that what God taught us by sending Jesus? Jesus died for us. He loved us enough to die for us and La’Darious loved his little sister enough to die for her,” Massy said.

Channel 9 will continue to follow this story. Check back for updates.
