Scooter in deadly Raleigh crash was stolen, police say

RALEIGH, N.C. — Police said a malfunctioning headlamp on a stolen motor scooter is what initially caught officers' attention in Raleigh before it crashed killing two people.

The officer who spotted the scooter shortly after 3 a.m. Wednesday said he had not yet tried to pull the vehicle over when the crash happened.

Police said the two men on the scooter died after it crossed the center line and collided with a police cruiser chasing after a speeding car.

That officer was going 77 mph.
