Charlotte's largest employee is dealing with complaints after paychecks did not deposit for some Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District employees.
Channel 9 reporter Angela Hong spoke with some teachers, who didn't want to share their names, but said it was stressful to not see their money in their accounts Monday morning.
One teacher said they were not able to buy supplies for class Monday and also had a loan payment taken out automatically when they didn't have the money to cover it.
A CMS representative explained that paychecks are not late as long as they get the payments by the end of the business day Monday.
CMS teachers are supposed to get paid on the last day of every month, and Monday's paycheck is the first one of the new school year.
"This is the first pay after not being paid over the summer," Judy Kidd, with the North Carolina Classroom Teachers Association, said. "I'm sure that there are some budgets that are running rather thin."
CMS said depending on their banks, some teachers got paid early on Friday or Saturday, but everyone should be paid by the end of Monday.
The district explained the problem. When pay day falls on Saturday or Sunday, teachers get paid on Friday.
The last time payday fell on a Monday was March 2014, and CMS said some employees may have forgotten standard payday rules or expected to get the money sooner.
Many teachers did not want to talk on camera, but told Channel 9 they had set up automatic bill pay and not having the paycheck there when they expected caused problems.
Kidd understands why teachers were eager for that money after a long summer break.
"They have to budget the two months that they are not employed in the summertime so getting to that Aug. 31 paycheck is a stretch."
