Sheriff: Property stolen from man trying to help couple

DENVER, N.C. — A Denver man who allowed a couple to move into his residence to help them out ended up the victim of theft with a loss of thousands of dollars in cash, ammunition and collectible coins, according to a news release from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

Ronnie Reynolds of Denver reported to deputies on Dec. 2 that he first noticed about $2,000 worth of ammunition of various calibers missing on Nov. 23. He also said more than $5,000 in cash and a $4,000 coin collection were missing.

Detective Frank Runyon continued the investigation and determined that one of the people who Reynolds allowed to move into his home had made a number of trips to a pawn shop from September to Dec. 1.

A check with the pawn shop shows the property had already been sold and none will be recovered.

Nadine Marie Gearhart, 38, of Denver was charged with one felony count each of larceny and possession of stolen goods. She is also charged with five felony counts of obtaining property by false pretenses.

Gearhart's husband was not charged in the case.

She remains in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $27,500 secured bond.
