Shots fired during Newton armed robbery

NEWTON, N.C. — Newton police are investigating an armed robbery that happened at a gas station early Sunday. According to police, someone robbed the WilcoHess on Highway 321 as the store was opening at 6 a.m.

A newspaper carrier and gas station attendant were both in the building at the time. After the robber left the store, police said the newspaper carrier went outside to call police. As the carrier went outside, the robber fired shots toward the front door.

The newspaper carrier wasn’t seriously injured by the bullets.

Police aren’t sure how many people were involved in the robbery, but believe a red Grand Am was used as a getaway car.
