CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Some students at UNC Chapel Hill are upset over a course involving the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.
They claim the course is one-sided and readings offer points of view that justify terrorism, including readings from Guantanamo detainees.
Critics said the course should be balanced by offering perspective from 9/11 victims' family members.
“I am kind of disturbed that a class like this is being offered that's so one-sided in its readings,” said student Alec Dent.
The university said the course aims to introduce students to college-level critical analysis, writing and speaking.
The school issued the following statement on the class:
"The university isn't forcing a set of beliefs on students. Carolina offers academic courses to challenge students -- not to advocate one viewpoint over another."
