CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board Chair Stephanie Sneed is resigning from her role as chair.
Channel 9’s Jonathan Lowe received a statement from Sneed outlining the reasons for her decision.
Sneed’s resignation comes after months of controversy surrounding the school board’s decision to suspend Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill, investigate her, and then reinstate her in August.
The board’s handling of the investigation has been under scrutiny, with the investigation costing nearly $380,000. Hill has also publicly raised concerns about district contracts and her dealings with board leadership.
The controversy then shifted to Sneed’s leadership. Three board members — Cynthia Stone, Lenora Shipp and Monty Witherspoon — had called for Sneed to be removed as chair. The issue was scheduled to be discussed at Tuesday’s board meeting.
Sneed will remain on the CMS Board of Education but is stepping down from the chair position.
