Storm causes water buildup along I-77 toll-lane construction zone

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Monday’s severe storms dumped rain on Huntersville so quickly, inches of water built up on Interstate 77 in the toll-lane construction area.

With concrete barriers on both sides, the road couldn't drain fast enough and motorists faced a muddy commute.

North Carolina Department of Transportation officials said that construction material on a nearby slope intended to prevent erosion washed into a stormwater catch basin.

An NCDOT spokeswoman said the contractor was quick to respond and fixed the problem within 30 minutes.

"We need to examine the erosion control and make sure it's going to be safed-up and make sure this is not going to happen again,” NCDOT spokeswoman Jennifer Thompson said. “It's pretty unique to get a significant amount of rain like we did yesterday in such a short period of time."
