Street closures in uptown for Charlotte New Year's Eve

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte's New Year's Eve celebration started at 8 p.m. on Monday and continued past midnight.

If you went to the event last year, keep in mind, the organizers have made a couple of changes including its location.

Instead of being held at Romare Bearden Park, the main stage was at Levine Avenue of the Arts off Tryon Street.

"I love Romare, but if it's raining, it's muddy. Here, it's all street," resident Matt Hensey said.

There were food trucks, live music and fireworks lighting Charlotte’s skyline on South Tryon Street at Levine Avenue of the Arts.

"The party really gets going at 8:00 p.m. We'll have live music from a DJ beginning at 8, a band starting at 10, who will get us really ampted up that final countdown to 2019," Adam Rhew from the Charlotte Center City Partners said.

Organizers said fireworks would not go off at BB&T Ballpark this year. Instead, they were lit from the top of an uptown building.

Public parking, Charlotte Area Transportation System buses and the light rail was available.

The first road closures started Sunday.

Levine Avenue of the Arts between Tryon and Church streets is closed for setup.

On Monday, starting at 4 p.m., Tryon Street from Stonewall Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will also close. These roads will reopen early Tuesday morning.
