Tax assessor faces questions over controversial Meck County property values

CHARLOTTE — The Mecklenburg County tax assessor faced tough questions Tuesday from commissioners over some controversial property values.

Much of the debate stems from the revaluations of country clubs and golf courses across the county.

If you live in Mecklenburg County, you likely got your revaluation notice in your mailbox recently. According to officials, property assessments on average have increased more than 50%.

County commissioners met with the property assessor on Tuesday over why country clubs and golf courses will pay less in taxes.

For example, Quail Hollow’s tax value dropped more than $3 million. The value of Charlotte Country Club in Plaza Midwood saw a 30% decline and Piper Glen‘s fell by more than 50%. So while most Mecklenburg County homeowners could pay more in taxes, these properties won’t have to.

Homeowners told Channel 9 back when the county released the reevaluations, that taxes were already too high.

“People have not gotten good services for the taxes they’ve already paid, and so now they are paying excess taxes,” said resident Shamaiye Haynes, who lives in Enderly Park.

The county assessor has publicly defended the assessments, saying the county worked with a consultant who specializes in private golf courses. Before they were posted, assessor Ken Joyner explained his office looked at an entire area to determine the dollar amount.

“We’re going to take that neighborhood and all of those sales and use those sales to value that entire neighborhood,” he explained.

It’s important to note that officials still have to set the tax rates.

The county is holding a meeting next weekend for homeowners who believe their assessments are too high.
