ROCK HILL, S.C. — A 15-year-old girl is facing an attempted murder charge for an incident outside of a high school.
The teen was trying to kill her ex-boyfriend by running him down in her Jeep at South Pointe High School Tuesday, Rock Hill police said.
The victim ran between cars in a school parking lot Tuesday, afraid he'd be injured or killed.
He told police his ex-girlfriend tried to run him down with her Jeep.
Police spokesman Mark Bollinger said the male student was leaving wrestling practice Tuesday night when it happened.
"As he was walking across the parking lot he heard an engine rev up, and he looked up and there was a vehicle speeding at him at a high rate of speed, in reverse," Bollinger said.
The Jeep was 10 feet from him, when he ran between parked cars to the sidewalk and wasn't hurt. The Jeep then sped away.
"He was pretty shaken up at the time," Bollinger said.
The incident was apparently caught on security cameras. Though police are not releasing the video, after viewing it they said it appears to validate the boy's story.
Some students, like senior Tyra Sweeney, couldn’t believe it.
“When I heard it I was like, ‘No, not at South Pointe,’ so it's just shocking to hear. Anything can happen in high school," she said.
The teen told police the driver was his ex-girlfriend who was angry over their break up. She is not a student at South Pointe High School.
The victim said the day before she had sent him threatening text messages, saying she would “get a group of 'fam' and come and shoot you." Fam is a known Rock Hill gang.
The victim said she also texted, “I know where you live," as well as texting his address.
Terrence Hagins, who knows the victim, said he can't believe it's as serious as attempted murder.
"I don't think she meant it. She wasn't thinking right when she did it. She was probably just angry," Hagins said.
On Wednesday, school resource officers canvassed the school looking for other potential witnesses.
The driver will be petitioned as a Juvenile and the case will be heard in Family Court.
