LAKE HICKORY, N.C. — A teenager was taken to the hospital after a crash on a personal watercraft Friday on Lake Hickory, state wildlife officials told Channel 9.
The accident happened north of Conover, and Channel 9′s Dave Faherty spoke with first responders about what happened.
Officials told Faherty that because the victim is a juvenile, they can’t release many details, but they said the teen is expected to survive.
We found out there were two personal watercraft that were badly damaged during the collision at a cove on Lake Hickory. Officials say both of the people driving the watercraft were wearing life vests and had taken water safety classes.
The father of one teenager was home at the time and helped both of them get to the dock, where paramedics were able to help them, officers told Faherty.
On average, there are more than 600 people hurt each year in personal watercraft accidents across the country, according to statistics provided by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard also shared tips for the summer season on boating safely. You can see that advice at this link.
