YORK COUNTY, S.C. — York County reported 22 drug overdoses last week, the highest reported number of overdoses in any other South Carolina county that week. Three of those overdoses were fatal.
The South Carolina Overdose Emergency Response Team suggests a number of these overdoses are related to counterfeit Roxycodone (aka Roxys) – little blue look-alikes that contain high concentrations of fentanyl.
Data suggest Clover, Fort Mill, and Rock Hill have the highest hot spots for suspected overdoses, according to Keystone Substance Abuse Services, a nonprofit serving those struggling with substance abuse in York County.
“This epidemic does not discriminate,” Keystone’s Prevention Director Alexandra Greenawalt said. “It doesn’t matter your age, your ethnicity, race, religion, how much money you have in the bank, where you grew up—nothing. This isn’t someone else’s problem, it’s a problem we as a community must face together.”
For nearly 50 years, Keystone has offered hope and affordable professional care to people in the community who find themselves in difficult times due to health problems from substance use disorders.
Greenawalt said Keystone’s community outreach is working to prevent overdoses like these. They are making free Narcan available to anyone who needs it and also provides free pharmacy disposal bags.
If you or someone you know needs medical care for drug or alcohol use, call Keystone’s main office at (803) 324-1800 for a confidential screening.
