BOONE, N.C. — The Historical Preservation Commission (HPC) for the Town of Boone is inviting the community to a historical cemetery marker unveiling on June 2 at 1 p.m.
The ceremony will be held at the corner of Queen Street and North Water Street, just north of the Hayes-Bryan-Green Cemetery.
Boone’s HPC worked on a historic marker report during 2021 and 2022 for the cemetery and learned many prominent figures of Boone’s history are buried there. The marker was approved by the town council in April of last year.
The town’s public works department will close the eastbound part of Queen Street for half an hour before and after the unveiling.
Some of the notable graves in the cemetery include those of Boone’s first mayor, William Lewis Bryan, and Ransom Hayes, who donated 25 acres of land to create the new Watauga County seat in the late 1840s.
