Police: 20-year-old man dies in DWI crash in University area

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person died in an early morning crash Tuesday on Mallard Creek Church Road, police said.

The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. A car veered out of the westbound right lane in front of another car and then down an embankment.

The car ran off the road, went airborne, struck a tree and rolled down an embankment, landing upside down.

The driver, Milan Shannon, 21, was able to crawl out but the passenger, Devin Johnson, 20, died even though he was wearing a seat belt, police said.

Shannon was rushed to the hospital and is expected to recover, police said. Johnson died on the scene, police said.

Johnson's aunt told Channel 9 that Johnson was studying to be a trainer at East Carolina University. He played football at Providence High School.

"He was going to be extraordinary, he really was," Colleen Gebhardt said. "He had a strong personality. People gravitated to him so this is a huge loss."

If you would like to help, the family set up a GoFundMe account.

Johnson lost his father to a heart attack earlier this month, Gebhardt said. She said he wanted to transfer to the University of North Carolina-Charlotte so he could help take care of his family.

"As much as you tell children call, no questions asked, just call, they don't always. I guess they don't always do it," Gebhardt said.

Shannon was charged him with DWI, felony death by motor vehicle and reckless driving. He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
