Troopers: Woman, 3-year-old son killed in Ashe County head-on crash

ASHE COUNTY, N.C. — A woman and her 3-year-old son died in a crash in Ashe County on Monday night, state troopers said.

According to the Highway Patrol, the crash happened on U.S. 221 near Shatley Road just after 7 p.m.

A 2005 Honda CRV was heading south on U.S. 221 and crossed over the centerline. That was when it slammed head-on into a 1988 Ford Mustang, investigators said.

Troopers said the Mustang swerved left as it tried to avoid the SUV. The driver of the SUV was seriously hurt and flown to the hospital.

The driver of the Mustang was not hurt in the crash. The front-seat passenger, 22-year-old Harley Marie Taylor, died at the scene. Her son, 3-year-old Bentley Taylor, was in the backseat and was taken to the hospital. Officials said he died Tuesday morning from his injuries.

Bentley Taylor was properly strapped into his car seat but neither the Mustang’s driver nor Harley Taylor was wearing a seatbelt.

Troopers said they are consulting with the DA and charges are pending the ongoing investigation.
