Police charge 2 suspects after shootout at northwest Charlotte apartments

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police arrested two men accused in a shootout in a northwest Charlotte.

Police say Rodney and Brandon Simpson are charged with attempted murder after they opened fire at the Ravenwood Apartments off Lynn Street.

Three people were shot. Police told Channel 9 Monday that some of those who were shot were involved in the shootout. Brandon Simpson was one of three people injured in the shooting.

The gun battle broke out just before 9:30 a.m. at the Ravenwood Hills apartment complex on Lynn Street. Officers responded to the scene in reference to subjects shooting at one another.

Shortly after the shooting, two people were injured and drove themselves to the hospital. One suffered non-life threatening injuries and the other had serious injuries, police said.

Police told Channel 9 that a short time later, a third victim showed up at CMC-Huntersville with potentially life-threatening injuries.

"When we arrived, the victims had already left the scene,” Lt. Anderson Royston said. “However, we located several shell casings in the parking lot and several witnesses."

Fortunately, no bystanders were hit by the gunfire. A lot of neighbors told Channel 9 they hit the deck when the shots rang out.

"Well, I thought it was fireworks," said Sharon Kelly. "When I heard more, I knew it was gunshots. When I came outside it was just like the Wild, Wild West -- bullets was just going."

No one is in custody.

Investigators told Channel 9 they believe a dispute over drugs may have played a role.
