CHARLOTTE — A University of North Carolina at Charlotte program is getting funding from the Biden administration.
The Carolinas Innovation Center for Optics and Metrology (CICOM) Strategy Development Consortium was awarded the grant so that it can use its research to create “a sustainable manufacturing framework.”
The program will use the grant to help strengthen the Charlotte area’s ability to manufacture, commercialize, and use technology that’s essential to the country’s economic and national security.
The news is tied to another announcement Monday that resulted in a mixed bag for the Carolinas.
More than 30 areas across the country were dubbed Tech Hubs. Those are areas designed to drive innovation and job creation through millions of dollars in federal investments.
North Carolina didn’t make the list, but South Carolina did for a project on clean, renewable energy.
In all, 32 states and Puerto Rico were included in the Tech Hub designation.
