CHARLOTTE, N.C. — UNC Charlotte 49ers assistant football coach Phil Ratliff has died, according to UNCC Athletics.
A school spokesperson said he had been in “grave condition” nearly a week after being hospitalized after suffering a "cardiac event."
The Charlotte 49ers released the following statement Sunday:
The Charlotte 49ers regretfully announce the passing of coach Phil Ratliff, today. He was surrounded by family and friends. His adoring wife, Jenni, was by his side.
He was an amazing man and was loved by all who knew him. We appreciate the continued thoughts and prayers for the Ratliff family. They are beyond grateful for the overwhelming love and support.
The family appreciates your respect for their privacy during this difficult period.
Memorial service arrangements will be forthcoming.
Ratliff, 44, is Charlotte’s offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. He has been with the 49ers program since 2012 and previously was tight ends coach at Marshall and an assistant at James Madison. Ratliff was a two-time All-American offensive lineman at Marshall, where he was captain of the 1992 national championship team.
