Undercover officers make heroin bust in Lincolnton

LINCOLNTON, N.C. — Only Channel 9 was there as undercover officers swarmed a truck just outside Lincolnton looking for black tar heroin and two women -- Katherine Treadway, 30, and Loretta Starnes, 32.

9 Investigates: Woman with 5-year-old son arrested on drug charges

But the only person in the truck was Treadway's husband, who said he had no idea she was accused of trafficking drugs.

Undercover officers rushed to the couple's home in Gaston County and found Katherine Treadway.

Investigators said she hid 2 grams of the black tar heroin inside her body and admitted to ingesting more of the drug.

She was taken to a hospital, but her accused accomplice was taken straight to jail.

Undercover officers swarmed Starnes' home outside Lincolnton.

The officers found more than 2 grams of black tar heroin and syringes, and Starnes denied any involvement to Eyewitness News.

"I'm confused why I'm in this and I had nothing to do with it," Starnes said. "I got nothing else to say."

Both women are facing felony drug possession charges, but investigators said they're part of a much larger problem -- people getting black tar heroin in Charlotte then distributing it throughout surrounding counties.

This is the third bust in just two weeks.

On Saturday, two men were caught attempting to bring the drug into Lincoln County, and on Sept. 24 Channel 9 was there as another couple was charged.

Residents said they're thankful investigators are making these arrests.

Officers are still investigating where black tar heroin is coming from in Charlotte, and they are also targeting dealers who sell China White heroin.
