Upscale SouthPark restaurant secures small-business loan

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Peppervine’s executive chef, Bill Greene, secured $250,000 from the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program on the second try.

Those funds are a lifeline to restaurants such as his, but at the same time, do little to ease the uncertainty. Restaurant reopenings fall into the third phase of Gov. Roy Cooper’s plan to reopen the economy — though that timetable will be dictated by COVID-19’s spread.

“It’s kind of a double-edged sword. I don’t think it’s a great idea to rush and open full blast. What’s the point if no one comes?” Greene said. “Restaurants survive on slim profit margins.”

Peppervine had just celebrated its first year in business when novel coronavirus forced it to close. The 7,800-square-foot upscale eatery — the second for Greene and wife Anita — is located in Piedmont Town Center in SouthPark. Then came COVID-19.
