Police charge man who tried to break into home with mother, 2 children inside

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested and charged a man who tried to break into a home in northwest Charlotte with a mother and two children inside.

Police charged James Adams with secret peeping and attempted breaking and entering.

Adams is expected to appear in court Wednesday.

Officers responded to the home on Dedmon Drive around in late August after receiving a suspicious person call.

A woman told police she was home with her two children when a man rang her doorbell.

She said the suspect walked to the backyard, looked into a bedroom and tried to break in several times.

"It's actually very rare that you have this kind of thing happen,” Capt. Ryan Kendall with CMPD said. “Where you have someone trying to break in the house with the residents home.”

Kendall said the woman living there didn’t recognize the man, and they released surveillance video hoping someone would.

"We've gone door to door in the neighborhood, increased our patrols in the neighborhood. Doing everything we can to identify the suspect," Kendall said.

Channel 9 spoke to residents who said they didn't know which home was involved, but they were concerned because it’s a tight-knit community.

“Yeah, because we don't usually have that kind of problems around here. This a nice neighborhood. Everybody minds their own business, so we haven't had that kind of problem up here,” neighbor William Summers said.
