CHARLOTTE — After redevelopment plans forced them from the former Eastland Mall site, skaters in the Charlotte area will soon have a new DIY skatepark.
Volunteers gathered on Saturday to begin building the Kilborne DIY Skatepark. They poured concrete and started constructing obstacles.
The skatepark is being set up on the former tennis courts at Kilborne, which is not far from the former Eastland Mall site.
The developer of Eastland Yards, Crossland Southeast, demolished the old Eastland DIY skatepark, which had been in place for years. But organizers have raised more than $13,000 for the DIY project that will never really be finished.
“The cool thing about the DIY skatepark model is its never fully finished, it can always be added on to, renovated, changed, so we foresee this as an ongoing future with no potential end date,” said Luke Giduz of the Charlotte Skate Foundation.
The new skatepark comes after lots of legal back and forth between the city and the county.
In the end, the Charlotte Skate Foundation secured a deal with Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation to lease the Kilborne site for $1 per year.
